“I love you,” it’s as simple as that.

“I love you,” it’s as simple as that.

(excerpt from the final message from our Advent series)

We have all heard the word love. Maybe we throw the word around to get others to love us back.  Maybe we feel the inner need to be loved unconditionally, I know I do.  Who will love me for me? Who will love you for you?  Have you ever been told these words “I love you” and felt, sensed, that the I love you had some conditions behind it, some strings attached?

I found this little poem in a book about the song by Tim McGraw “Live like you were dying.”

“I love you. It’s not a weight you must carry around.
I love you. It’s not a box that holds you in.
I love you. It’s not a standard you have to bear.
I love you. It’s not a sacrifice I make.
I love you. It’s not a pedestal you are frozen upon.
I love you. It’s not an expectation of perfection.
I love you. It’s not my life’s whole purpose.
I love you. It’s not your life’s whole purpose.
I love you. It’s not to make you change.
I love you. It’s not even to make you love me.
I love you. It’s as pure and simple as that.
I LOVE YOU!”

Isn’t that how we imagine LOVE?  Isn’t that how we want to LOVE?

John 3.16,17
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

For God So Loved the world
It’s as simple as that.  God so loved people, humanity and you.
It’s as simple as that.

Do you know God’s love?
That is His “I love you” it’s as simple as that!

Or – is His love for you based on something else?
Maybe you have grown up in a home where love was given based on performance

Or maybe
You came from a religious home or church that made God’s love an issue
Of earning or performing

Or maybe
You are in a relationship that is based on your ability to love back…
and only then do you receive love….

Quite frankly—
I know many many many followers of Christ—that still believe that this present
Called the Son of God, the Messiah, God in the flesh, Jesus the Christ
This gift given for the redemption of your soul, your life, your being
is still a gift that is not freely given—not based on the complete—
unconditional love of the Father—but this gift is somehow earned
Based on
Religious stuff
Good behavior
And all that goes with earning it.

We know those moments when we are alone—and left to our imaginations— sometimes in those dark times
When we think— I’m not a good person-
Or
Boy or boy—I messed that up
Or
Geeeeezer— I surely don’t deserve God’s love—
Or
those moments when we think
Man—I am so good and those people, those people—well they are lost
They are sinful
They are not deserving of the Love of God
But I’m so so beyond that—

It’s in those moments—that we miss this Truth—

That Christmas—that the star that pointed the Magi to the gift from God
Was given because,
Because— God said  I love you
and it’s as simple as that.

1 John 4.9,10
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

What do you make of God’s love for you?
Isn’t it true—in the quietness of your Heart
Or in the midst of some issues that rise up
Or when you fail…
when you sin
when you sin big
when you feel like there is no hope in you
when you feel like the pain of your past
the pain of the reality of the situation you got yourself in
when life happens…

That you and I can actually understand this truth:
This is love—His love towards us
First.  Not that we loved God.
Second.  The He loved us first
Third.  That His Son, this baby we celebrate this season
is certainly the only atonement for our sin.

God’s “I LOVE YOU”  is as simple as that!

For God so loved the world, that He gave us His son
And by faith— believing that His love through sending His son
Would make you righteous…… period.
You see, when you and I come to terms with this truth
It changes everything.
When you finally come to terms with His love for you
That you don’t have to perform
That you don’t have to have it together
That He made you
That He doesn’t make mistakes
That you will never be Holy by doing external things, ever period
When you finally come to terms with this truth

That God Loves you, it’s as simple as that.

That truth will change the trajectory of your life forever

How you ask?
When you come to terms with God’s love for you
You stop trying to change yourself….
You stop trying to do things to earn His approval
You stop trying to earn His love
You stop trying to be someone you are not
And you start
Understanding this truth
That with out God’s love in His sending His Son for our redemption
For without this love that sent His Son
We were Helpless
And today
Helpless turns to
Dependence

We could not change
But He can change us through the work of His son in our lives
We were once dependent on self help books
Religious activity
Our moral compass (which is actually a joke) or those that claim moral superiority
Those pompous people think they are so moral
They fall short of the glory of God
They are not together

You see, real transformation begins by understanding
God’s perfect love towards us

That Faith in Christ Jesus changes our unrighteous, broken hearts
To Righteousness
And ultimately its through these truths that humility finds it’s rightful place as we finally come to terms with
How incredibly impossible it is to fix ourselves
But how incredibly possible it is to have a relationship to the Living God, through Faith in Christ Jesus the Christ.
And this humility drives us to the understanding
Of How much we need Him
How much we rely on Him
And ultimately
How much He loves us
And that is as simple as that.

He is jealous for me, Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden, I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And oh, how He loves us oh
Oh how He loves us,
How He loves us all
~David Crowder

May you know more and more everyday
God’s love for you It’s as simple as that
